What Is Gobustan?

Gobustan National Park, officially the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site 60 kilometers south of Baku containing one of the most significant concentrations of prehistoric rock art in the world. More than 6,000 petroglyphs made between 5,000 and 40,000 years ago images of hunters, animals, boats, ritual dances, and figures that document human life in this region before writing was invented.

This is not a museum reconstruction. These are original carvings on original rock surfaces in their original landscape. You walk among them on the same stone paths that the people who made them walked.

Getting to Gobustan from Baku

Option 1: Private Transfer with Luxline (Recommended)

Your driver picks you up from your Baku hotel. The coastal highway south to Gobustan is in excellent condition throughout the drive takes approximately 1 hour. Your driver waits at the site while you visit and returns you to your hotel.

Advantages: Hotel pickup, English speaking driver with knowledge of the site, flexible timing, fixed price, optional 4x4 extension to mud volcanoes, ability to stop at Bibi-Heybat Mosque en route if desired.

Option 2: Public Bus

Bus 195 runs from the 20 January metro station toward Gobustan. Journey time is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours with stops. The bus drops you at the highway junction not at the park entrance, which requires an additional taxi or long walk. The return journey requires waiting for the bus, which runs infrequently.

Honest assessment: Workable for budget travelers comfortable with uncertainty. Not practical for visitors with limited time or those wanting to add the mud volcanoes.

Option 3: Taxi via Bolt

Book a Bolt from central Baku to Gobustan approximately 40 to 60 AZN one way. The driver will not wait at the site, meaning you need to book a return separately. Bolt drivers rarely speak English.

What to See at Gobustan

The Indoor Museum

Start at the main museum building at the park entrance. The museum provides essential context maps of the rock carving locations, explanations of the different periods and motifs, scale models, and the historical background that makes the open-air site comprehensible rather than just visually interesting. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.

The Open-Air Rock Carving Area

From the museum, a marked trail leads to the main concentration of petroglyphs on the rocky hillside above. The carvings are distributed across multiple rock faces hunters with bows, deer and aurochs, boats filled with figures, dancing humans holding hands, and the mysterious recurring images that archaeologists have spent decades interpreting.

Walk slowly. The carvings reward attention. Many are immediately obvious; others become visible only when you have been looking at the rock surface for long enough for your eye to find them.

Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours at the open-air site.

The Gaval Stone

One specific rock deserves special mention. The Gaval Daşı Gaval Stone is a large flat rock that produces a clear, resonant drum sound when struck with an ordinary stone. Pick up a pebble and try it. The sound is immediate and striking. Historians believe this was used as a percussion instrument by the site's earliest inhabitants. The rock carvings nearby show figures dancing the music and the dance recorded together, ten thousand years ago.

Important Safety Note

Gobustan is natural habitat for snakes. The park management applies chemical treatments along the designated visitor pathways. Stay on the marked trail throughout your visit. Do not leave the designated path.

The Mud Volcanoes: Adding Them to Your Visit

Approximately 12 kilometers beyond the main Gobustan site, the Absheron mud volcanoes are one of the most unusual natural formations in the world. Cold-temperature geological phenomena producing fields of bubbling grey mud pools some small and slow, some actively erupting with sudden bursts in a landscape that looks like a different planet.

Azerbaijan has one of the highest concentrations of mud volcanoes anywhere on Earth. The Absheron field is the most accessible.

The road to the mud volcanoes is unpaved. A 4x4 vehicle is required. Standard cars get stuck. If you want to include the mud volcanoesand you should tell Luxline at booking so the appropriate vehicle is provided.

Time at the mud volcanoes: 30 to 45 minutes is sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Gobustan from Baku?

Gobustan National Park is approximately 60 kilometers south of Baku on the Caspian coastal highway. By private transfer with Luxline, the journey takes about 1 hour on well-maintained road. By public bus, the journey takes 1.5 to 2 hours with the complication of a highway junction drop-off requiring additional transport to the park entrance.

Do I need a guide to visit Gobustan?

A guide is not mandatory but significantly enhances the experience. The rock carvings are spread across a large area and many are not immediately obvious to the untrained eye. A Luxline driver-guide who knows the site well will show you the most significant carvings, explain what each depicts, point out the Gaval Stone, and provide the historical context that transforms the visit from scenic walking to genuine understanding.

Can I visit Gobustan independently?

Yes. The park is accessible independently, the museum provides context, and the main trail is clearly marked. Independent visitors manage the visit successfully. However, the mud volcano extension is not practical without a 4x4 vehicle and a driver who knows the track, and public transport from Baku to the park requires navigating an additional connection from the highway junction to the entrance.

Are the Gobustan mud volcanoes worth visiting?

Yes strongly recommended if you have the time and the right vehicle. The mud volcanoes are entirely unlike anything most visitors have seen before. The 12-kilometer drive from the main Gobustan site adds 30 to 45 minutes of driving and 30 to 45 minutes at the site — a total addition of about 1.5 hours. The unpaved approach road requires a 4x4. Luxline provides the appropriate vehicle when asked at booking.

What is the entrance fee for Gobustan?

The entrance fee for Gobustan National Park is approximately 15 AZN per person, covering both the indoor museum and the open-air rock carving site. The mud volcanoes have no entrance fee. Prices are subject to change verify at the entrance on the day of your visit.
